PLDT Turns Over Balik Baterya Reading Corners to BASA Pilipinas
DepEd celebrated National Reading Month last December and as BASA Pilipinas Program's support to this, PLDT, through its Motolite-PBSP Balik Baterya Program funds, turned over 6 reading corners to DepEd-endorsed schools in La Union, namely, Aringay Central School, Cabaruan Integrated School, Rimos Elementary School, Sto Tomas Central School, Segngat Elementary School and Mangaan Elementary School.
BASA Pilipinas, of which PBSP is a member of the implementing team, aims to improve the reading skills of one million Filipino school children. The program targets to assist 340 public schools in La Union.
The donation completes the 50 reading corners PLDT has provided nationwide.
TB in Children Workshop for EGV Staff Conducted
Last December 11-12, 2013, the Project Management Team of the United Way Worldwide/The Hershey Company Strengthening the Healthcare Management of Elsie Gaches Village Project participated in a TB in the Children Workshop in Ramada Hotel, Binondo.
The workshop aims to improve the TB case finding both in adult and pedia clients of EGV through identification of PPD standard readers and updates the team on diagnosis and management of TB in children. Through this, EGV PMT has a better chance of detecting suspected TB patient and of managing its prevalence and spread in the whole community. If left untreated, a TB patient can infect 10 to 15 others, which can be transmitted easily through by the simple act of coughing and sneezing.
The workshop is a part of a bigger project that includes capacity-building of EGV personnel, provision of basic equipment and critically-needed medicines and linking the institution for resources.
SMART Launches Vermicompost Facility
Smart Communications, Inc., in partnership with the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP), has embarked on a vermicompost facility project for Seeds and Fruits Multi-Purpose Cooperative (SFMC) farmers in Tublay, Benguet.
The project aims to help reduce unnecessary disposal of vegetable trimmings as these are utilized in vermicomposting to promote organic farming. The sale of vermicompost will also give additional income for the farmers.
Volunteers from the telecommunications company went to the site to help kickstart the operations of the facility. The volunteers were able to participate in activities like painting, cutting of grass and shredding of vegetable trimmings.
The one-hectare facility is expected to produce an initial yield of 470 sacks of vermicompost per month.

MPIC Turns Over Work Tools for Assisted HOA
MPIC turned over tools and equipment for plumbing and masonry to its assisted manpower group in Ana Maria Homeowners Association, Brgy. Calamansian, Caloocan City. The provision of tools is part of the ManPower for Infrastructure Cooperative (MPIC) Development Project which is targeted to assist at least 25 households by organizing a community-based cooperative for livelihood, particularly by engaging the skills trainees in the construction industry.
Handing over the tools to the group’s president, Mr. Johnny Araza, is MPIC President and CEO Mr. Jose Ma. K. Lim.

Around 30 community members of GK-Nestle Lipa attended the strategic planning and team building sessions conducted last Dec. 16-17, 2013.
This is to prepare the community as its household members embark on a sewing skills training project jointly implemented by PBSP and Gawad Kalinga, and funded by Accenture's Skills to Succeed Program and Nestle Philippines.
The sessions were conducted by PBSP Luzon Regional Center Project Officer Gizelle Ponce and PBSP CRTD Training Officer Manette Talag.
